Volcom and the Sustainable Development

Some days ago, the final sustainability report for the 2014 Volcom Pipe Pro was released, and for the second year in a row, the contest has been certified as a Deep Blue Surfing Event by Sustainable Surf.

Sans titre

Sustainable Surf is a non-profit charity organization based in California whose mission is simple: to be the catalyst that transforms surf culture and industry into a powerful community that protects the ocean playground. Rob Machado and Greg Long are ambassadors for Sustainable Surf.

Sustainable Surf describes a Deep Blue Surfing Event (DBSE) as a more “ocean friendly” event. The criteria has ben endorsed by the ASP as it sets a clear path for reducing the environmental impacts of a professional surf contest and providing social benefits for the local community.

Each year, Volcom aim at improving upon the initiatives that started with simply issuing reusable water bottles to competitors and staff and using previous year’s banners to make tje tote bags for the participants. It has evolved to a carbon neutral event, with locally produced bio-fuel, food, plates and ustensils chipped and layered at the local farm.

The 2012 Volcom Fiji Pro and the 2011 Rip Curl Pro Search -that took place by San Francisco- were also granted Deep Blue Surfing Events.

It is interesting to see that a brand like Volcom is really involved in the sustainable development. In 2011, I read this article about Derek Sabori, Sr Director of Sustainability at Volcom, and I was impressed to see such a core brand -whose motto is “Youth Against Establishment”- being involved in this cause. But it actually is something logical: the Establishment could be assimilated to the ones who haven’t cared enough about the ocean, the forest, etc., whereas the Youth is aware that, if they don’t act, they will be responsible of the Earth’s death.

Besides, the name of Kering, which is Volcom’s owner, sounds like “caring”. Have you got the point?
